HIKE WITH RESCUE DOGS

Caravana Canina is a non-profit organization based in Oaxaca’s central valleys, dedicated to sterilizing, vaccinating, fostering and finding homes for street dogs and cats.

Caravana Canina works with a team of foster families who provide temporary housing and care while animals await their permanent homes. Nature hikes are an essential part of preparing a rescue dog for their future adoptive homes. 

These hiking tours:

  • provide dogs with socialization, exercise and experience in new situations

  • promote the dog’s adoption

  • help fundraise to continue our rescue efforts

 

We offer two distinct tours, each with different scenery, timeframe and pricing.

  • Venture to the hills just above Oaxaca City, where you’ll get to appreciate beautiful views of the valley below. This is a more urban hike; guests will pass rural homes and farmland on dirt roads and little farm trails.

    LANDSCAPE / ATTIRE Expect prickly cacti and loose rocks; please wear appropriate shoes and clothing for these conditions.

  • Venture about an hour our outside of the city, to the Sierra norte mountains of Oaxaca, into a beautiful, clean, protected pine forest. There are a range of trail options from easy to moderate depending on guest fitness level. 

    After our hike we will enjoy a tasty lunch at a favorite mountain comedor. 

    LANDSCAPE / ATTIRE This region can become chilly, so we suggest bringing a sweater and scarf just in case, and wearing pants and closed toed shoes.

  • We will be bringing different dogs on each tour. Any dog that joins this experience will have a basic level of training and socialization; however, this may be a first-time hike for some. Guests reserving this trip should be patient and comfortable with animals.

    We will select dog hiking companions based on need at the specific moment of reservation.

    Hike length and pace will be determined upon necessities and desires of both guests and dogs.

    Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable hiking shoes.

    Transportation from your hotel or house in Oaxaca city is included.

    Our regular tours are limited to 4 guests. If you are a group of more than 4, please contact us directly to discuss logistics.
